Stevan Ridley got most of his reps with the second-team offense. White has reportedly had an impressive camp and could cut into Ridley's usage, especially if Ridley's fumbling issues resurface.
Patriots rookie running back James White is getting rave reviews and appears to be the No. 3 back behind Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen. | 08/01/2014 11:08 AM
Patriots rookie running back James White is getting rave reviews and appears to be the No. 3 back behind Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen.
He's getting rave reviews from beat writers and even Bill Belichick. Still, unless there is an injury to one of the top-two runners, White shouldn't have much fantasy value in 2014.
James White could be heavily invovled early | 07/19/2014 9:54 AM
ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss said rookie RB James White "will play more than 20 percent" of the Patriots' offensive snaps in his bold predictions column.
This lives up the bold prediction moniker, but it may not be too far off reality. White was one of the more pro-ready backs in this year's draft class, and he has only an injury-prone Shane Vereen and fumble-prone Stevan Ridley ahead of him on the depth chart. There are many scenarios that could see White earn this kind of playing time and perhaps even some redraft value this season.
White could be a factor early in passing game | 06/21/2014 9:59 AM
ESPN Patriots reporter Mike Reiss believes fourth-round RB James White could be a factor in the passing game early in his career.
Reiss made the same Shane Vereen comparison coach Bill Belichick made earlier in the offseason. White is not on the same athletic level as Vereen, but he is a pro-ready pass blocker that could spell Vereen this season and eventually take over the main pass-back role if Vereen decides to walk when his contract expires next March. White is unlikely to be a contributor in redraft leagues, but he is a definite stash in Dynasty formats.
Belichick compares James White to Vereen | 06/04/2014 10:58 PM
Patriots coach Bill Belichick likened fourth-round pick James White's skill set to that of Shane Vereen, calling the Wisconsin product "an elusive back who is dynamic in the passing game."
White isn't realistically as dynamic as Vereen -- or as elusive -- but it's entirely possible the Pats envision White as Vereen's eventual replacement. Vereen's contract is up after this year. White is pro-ready from a pass-game standpoint, excelling in pass protection as Wisconson's blitz-pickup specialist ahead of Melvin Gordon in 2013. He finished college with 73 receptions.
