Has a knack for getting into the backfield, thanks to great size, power, speed, and quickness. An instinctive reactor and deep penetrator who can manhandle blockers with superior leverage and superb hand technique.
Isn't a pure tackler in space and will lose his man at times. Must develop a more consistent first step, and needs work on handling double coverage. Somewhat injury-prone.
Elite defensive tackle.

With the draft now over, McCoy becomes priority No. 1 for the Bucs' front office. The third overall pick in 2010 is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is set to earn a $10.295 million base salary. McCoy has 14.5 sacks the past two seasons and is expected to be a great fit in coach Lovie Smith's new defense. Already the third-highest paid defensive tackle in the league, McCoy will likely command over $12 million annually on his new deal.

McCoy is set to earn $10.295 million in 2014, the final year of his rookie contract. He's coming off a dominant season that saw him pile up nine sacks and four batted passes, getting named a first-team All-Pro for the first time. "We want him around for a long time," Smith said.
McCoy has lost almost 20 pounds | 06/21/2013 4:44 PM
Gerald McCoy has shed about 20 pounds in the offseason.
"That's a lot," McCoy said. "It's just been diet and working. It's taken a lot of focus and dedication." It's unclear what McCoy exactly weighs now; the Pro Bowl defensive tackle is listed at 300 pounds on both the team and league websites, but it's hard to see him playing at 280. Nevertheless, it is likely he's seeking to get quicker.
